History of Hotel Damsquare

Hotel Damsquare, formerly known as Hotel de Gerstekorrel, is one of the oldest family-run hotels in Amsterdam. Founded in the 1920s the hotel has undergone thorough renovations in recent years. Over the past century it has been managed by four different families with the current family continuing the proud tradition.

The first owner, Mr J.H. (Tinus) Coffeng, managed to steer the hotel through the difficult years of World War II. After him, the hotel was run by a Dutch couple, who sold it to an English-Italian couple in the 1970s. Although successful in the 1980s, the hotel was no longer up to modern standards, with shared toilets and showers. In the early 1990s, the hotel was taken over by a Dutch-Finnish family. Meanwhile, the second generation of the family is learning the hotel trade.

When the hotel was taken over it was modernised and all rooms were renovated to include their own showers and toilets. Since the first renovation the hotel has been continuously upgraded, renovated and refreshed. The rich family history is a source of pride and guests are warmly welcomed.
